I’d gone to the hospital alone to check whether I was pregnant, and I hadn’t told Hansel about the positive result. I’d wanted to tell him about it during our engagement ceremony so it’d be a surprise. I hadn’t even told Cheryl.
So, the doctor was the only one who knew. How had Josie and Violet found out? They couldn’t have been watching my every move, could they?
My heart trembled. What else had they done behind my back? Was the fact that I was pregnant with Hansel’s child the reason they’d decided to kill me?
“Hansel and I went to the crime scene earlier,” Violet said.
Josie looked anxious. “The police didn’t find anything, did they?”
Violet shook her head, which made Josie relax. “Things are going as planned. Thank God we moved the body fast enough. The consequences would’ve been unimaginable if we hadn’t.”
I knew that Violet was behind the relocation of my body!
God, were they really the ones behind my death? Just because I’d been pregnant with Hansel’s child? Wasn’t that too much of a risk to take if that was the only reason for murdering me?
I’d lost my life, and no matter how long I went missing, the situation would ultimately catch the police’s attention. It hadn’t been easy for Josie and Violet to latch onto the Frost family. Why would they get entangled in a murder case over a baby and risk ruining whatever riches lay in their futures?
All they had to do was force me to miscarry. Why did they take such a huge risk by murdering me?
Violet curled her lip. “Thank God we had someone to help us.”
Josie didn’t look happy. Instead, she looked worried. “It’s never a good thing to have someone constantly leading us by the nose, Violet. We didn’t murder Elara, yet we have to take the blame for this. We’ll be murderers if we don’t deal with this properly.”
Violet looked nonchalant. She patted Josie’s hand and said, “Don’t worry, Mom. Everything has been planned, and every step is designed to ensure that nothing will go wrong. We won’t become murderers. All you need to do is wait for me to marry Hansel so that we can enjoy a rich life together.”
Terror washed over me when I heard that. Someone else was behind my death–Violet and Josie were only taking the fall for this! Why would they do that? Could it be that someone else had gotten to me while they’d planned to get rid of my baby? Had that someone later pushed the blame on them?
I thought about how my assailant’s first attack had been to stab me in the belly. The attack wouldn’t have killed me, but it would’ve killed my baby.
But if Violet and Josie had sent that person, they would be the masterminds behind this. Why would they claim to be taking the fall for someone else?
What other things had they done without me knowing?
I’d never made enemies with anyone. Who would want my life?
Chills ran down my spine. I felt like I was standing on the edge of a cliff with a gaping abyss before me. It was as dark and unfathomable as my death.
When I returned to my senses, I was in the corridor. I’d followed Violet out of the hospital ward without even realizing it. She slapped a janitor as I watched.

The janitor cried out in pain. Violet snapped, “Do you know what my shoes are made of? Suede! They can’t come into contact with water, but you’ve splashed water all over them! You’ve ruined my shoes!”
“I–I’ll pay you back for them.” The janitor fearfully lowered her hand, revealing a clear handprint on her cheek. It was evident that Violet hadn’t held back earlier.
“Pay me back?” Violet snorted scornfully. “Do you know how much they cost? They’re hundreds of thousands of dollars! Are you going to sell your house to pay me back?”
The janitor panicked when she heard that. She crouched and started wiping Violet’s shoes with one of her rags. “I- I’ll help you wipe them, miss.”
