Chapter 29
Officer Crawford took the bag, his tone more solemn than before. “We’ll continue looking for clues.”
“Good.” Hansel nodded. “I’ll be waiting.”
He wrapped an arm around Violet and left the scene. After getting into the car, Violet buckled herself in while saying, “Lara’s taken things too far this time. I can’t believe she set up a crime scene to catch your attention. It didn’t work out too well; did it? The police will see through her tricks once they investigate the scene.
“I never would’ve expected her to do something like this. I was sad for her when she went missing, but I now only think she’s gone overboard.”
Fuck her sadness! I was dead!
I huffily slapped her twice.
She wanted to continue, but Hansel stopped her. “It’s not a bad idea for the police to investigate this as a criminal case.”
That surprised me. Was he swaying?
Violet’s eyes glinted coldly. She looked at him and hastily stopped him. “You can’t do that, Hansel. The police will eventually find something useful if something has really happened to Lara. It won’t be too late to set up a criminal case then.
“But what if she’s fine? Turning this into a criminal investigation will expose our relationship, and the public opinion will be in Lara’s favor because she’s at a disadvantage. I don’t care what people think of me and whether they’ll call me a homewrecker.
“I can’t let anything smear your reputation, though. That’s why we can’t let the police start a criminal investigation without solid proof. I’m doing this for your good, Hansel.”
Violet leaned against Hansel’s shoulder gently as she spoke. “Once Lara’s back, let’s just give her a proper apology. We’ve done her wrong, after all.”
“There’s no way I’m apologizing to her.” Somehow, her words had pissed him off. He gripped the wheel tightly as his gaze turned frosty. “She’d be better off dead!”
Violet’s eyes glinted smugly. She held Hansel tightly and said comfortingly, “I’m sorry, Hansel. I didn’t mean to bring up Lara hurting you.”
She’d deliberately angered Hansel so he’d stop obsessing over my disappearance. I didn’t understand her words, though. When had I ever hurt Hansel? I hadn’t known him in the past.
Hansel took Violet to Mackendale Hospital and dropped by to visit Josie. He only stayed for a few minutes, though.
Before he left, Josie asked, “Mr. Frost, now that you and Violet are engaged, when will you have her meet your family?”
I was surprised. Violet had yet to meet the Frost family! This was such a haphazard engagement.
Then again, it wasn’t too surprising. The engagement had only been part of his plan to get revenge on me. It made
sense that it had been rather rushed.
“I’ll make plans, Josie. Don’t worry about it,” Hansel said.

“Alright. I’m not rushing you or anything,” Josie said, smiling.

Once Violet returned after seeing Hansel off, Josie said grimly, “The longer this is dragged out, the likelier it’ll go wrong. You and Hansel have to get married as soon as possible.”
Violet nodded.
Josie leaned back and exhaled deeply. “Hansel is too hard to read. Thankfully, he had no idea that Elara was pregnant with his child. He probably wouldn’t have gotten engaged to you if he’d known.”
Violet’s gaze turned dangerously jealous. She clenched her fists and snarled, “That’s why it’s best for Elara to be dead.”
A chill ran down my spine. Josie and Violet knew that I was pregnant!
