Chapter 27
Violet’s expression darkened, and she forced through gritted teeth, “Elara…”
She sounded so hate–filled that it was almost as if she wanted me to be reborn so she could kill me again. It was too bad that I would remain dead.
I didn’t understand, though. Why was she so jealous and hostile to me when she’d already won? She’d gotten her 200–million–dollar diamond ring from Hansel.
Then, Violet’s expression shifted into one of anxiety. As Hansel hung up, she asked, “Is there any news about Lara?”
He grunted grimly.
“That’s great!” She put on a happy look. “Is she back?”
“No.” Hansel tightened his grip on his phone, the veins on his hand protruding from the force. “The police found a ring and… a pit.”
The police had finally found my burial ground–the forest. The pit had been cordoned off, and a forensic specialist and some police officers were investigating the scene.
Hansel and Violet were allowed in. The pit that the nasty men had filled had been dug up again.
Violet clung to Hansel’s arm, looking afraid as she fell half a step behind him, hiding behind him. Meanwhile, Hansel looked grim. He looked at the fresh earth beside the pit and clenched his jaw, his steps faltering. Soon, however, he strode over.
Officer Crawford stepped forward when he saw Hansel. “Mr. Frost.”
Hansel glanced at the forensic specialist and police officers bustling around the pit. He asked grimly, “Did you discover anything here?”
Officer Crawford said, “There was nothing in the pit.”
“Not even blood?”
“We haven’t found anything yet. Someone might’ve cleaned up the pit, or it could just be empty. We have to continue investigating to be sure.”
The men had dug up a gunny sack from the pit that night. My body had been in the sack, not buried directly in the earth. That was why there weren’t any traces of blood. This forest was just where my body had been dumped.
Also, my blood had already stopped flowing by the time my body was discarded. That meant that some time had passed before it was buried in the pit. Where had it been before that, then?
Hansel was evidently relieved when he heard Officer Crawford’s words. Violet patted her chest and said coquettishly, “I was so scared! I thought that Lara’s body-
“Where’s the ring, Officer Crawford?” Hansel interrupted.
“Here.” Officer Crawford held out a hand. “Come with me.
Hansel and Violet followed him to one side, where he took a plastic bag from a colleague. He handed it to Hansel and said, “This is the silver ring we found at the scene, Mr. Frost. It’s identical to the one Elara wore in the photo.”
The photo was of Hansel and me. It had been taken on the day he’d bought me the silver ring. It was a cheap thing, yet I’d held up a hand to show it off before the camera.
