Chapter 14
Hansel’s tone wasn’t as scornful and cold as it was when he was in front of others. There was actually emotion in
- it.
Was I imagining things?
Surprised, I looked at him. On that extremely handsome face of his, though his expression was still cold as ever, his eyes weren’t frosty like they used to be.
Was he really worried about me?
Suddenly, I teared up. An uncontrollable surge of warmth filled my heart despite my reluctance.
At least he had a guilty conscience toward me!
“Hansel.” Violet’s cheerful voice suddenly rang out behind us.
The flutter in my heart abruptly turned into disdain. The feeling was akin to finding a bug while munching on a delicious piece of cake.
Turning around, I glared at Violet, who was waltzing in like an elegant princess.
That murderer! She must’ve been the one who called my murderer.
She murdered me!
However, I couldn’t subject her to any form of punishment now.
Violet walked up to Hansel with a brilliant smile on her face. “Hansel, I have good news. My mother’s operation was a success. She’s just been transferred out of the ICU to a normal ward.”
Was Josie sick? No wonder I didn’t see her at Great–Grandpa’s birthday banquet.
Hansel was in a bad mood. He replied emotionlessly, “That’s great.”
Violet was stunned. She didn’t expect to hear such a cold response from him. She looked around and noticed the pendant he was holding, and a cold glint crossed her eyes. Even so, she appeared to be concerned.
“Hansel, is there still no news on Lara?”
Hansel clenched his jaws. I didn’t know if it was because he was unhappy that Violet mentioned me or if it was because he was frustrated that my whereabouts were still unknown.
Violet looked down for a moment. When she looked up at him again, her eyes were reddened. She sounded choked up, saying, “Hansel, I don’t understand why she’d hurt you that badly when you clearly love her so much!”
I was shocked.
When did I ever hurt Hansel?
Hansel’s expression became grim. His fist clenched even tighter around the pendant. He gritted his teeth even more, as though he couldn’t restrain the hatred buried deep within him anymore.
Violet pretended not to notice the change in his expression. She continued, “But don’t blame her for that, Hansel. I believe that she did that to gather the money needed for your medication. Still, there were so many other ways she could’ve chosen to earn money, yet she opted for the one thing men could never tolerate. It was no wonder you were so mad when you received the pills-

“Shut up!” Hansel barked, cutting her off harshly. “Never bring that up again!”

Violet’s face changed. She quickly apologized. “I’m sorry, Hansel.”

Hansel said nothing, but he was frighteningly gloomy. He wrapped his fingers tightly around the pendant one last time before tossing it aside.
My heart ached. The ridiculous feelings I had not too long ago turned bleak once again.
Why was I still so blind? Hansel was a heartless man. How could he possibly have a guilty conscience?
He was not thinking of me when he held the pendant, nor did he worry about me. He just wanted to dismiss all that I’d ever done for him.
Hansel strode out of the office without even trying to see where the pendant fell.
Violet pretended to feel sorry as she apologized after his cold silhouette. “Hansel, I didn’t mean to bring it up. Don’t be mad, and don’t get angry at Lara, too. She must’ve had no other ch-”
The door slammed closed so hard that even my ghost trembled.
Violet stopped speaking right then. She then dropped her kind facade to reveal her sullen expression.
