My professor patted Marcus on the shoulder excitedly. “Great! You snagged Jane. You’re a lucky guy!”
My colleagues joined in with good–natured teasing. Looking at the man in the black suit beside me, I felt my happiness overflow.
It was only after meeting Marcus that I understood what unconditional love felt like.
The ceremony began. I walked down the aisle with my father, towards Marcus. My father placed my hand in Marcus’s. “I entrust my daughter to you.”
Marcus promised my father, “Rest assured, I will cherish her for the rest of my life.”
Then came the vows, the exchange of rings, and the kiss.
Thunderous applause and cheers erupted from the audience. Everyone offered their blessings to the newlyweds.
In a corner, Dominic clapped, his eyes fixed on Jane.
He was suddenly reminded of the wedding two years ago, the one that never happened. He imagined Jane meticulously planning every detail of that wedding. The venue, the wedding dress, the reception… she must have compared countless options before making her decisions.
And how much pain she must have felt when she decided to cancel it.
He had wronged Jane, and now that she had found happiness, he should be happy for her. Dominic closed his eyes, a single tear
rolling down his cheek.
After the wedding, I was busy seeing off guests.
Just as I sat down to rest, Alexa approached with a strange expression, handing me a letter. “This is from Dominic. He asked me
to give it to you and to wish you a happy marriage.”
She patted my shoulder and left.
Then I remembered that Dominic had said he would attend the wedding, but I hadn’t seen him. I opened the letter and read it
slowly.
“Jane, I’m sorry. I haven’t completely let go of you, but I understand that we have no future. You’re right, we need to move on.

“Finally, please forgive my cowardice for not being able to offer my blessings in person. I hope you’ll have a wonderful and happy
life.”
I set the letter aside and went to find my husband. I had started my new life. And Dominic should start his own as well. The past is gone; the future is here.
