I was utterly exasperated by his statement.
Was I supposed to hire an actor to deceive him? I didn’t care what he thought.
But I was also puzzled.
He’d always been aloof, no matter how much I did for him.
I almost thought his heart was made of stone; it was impossible to warm him.
Only Beverly’s appearance revealed his capacity for tenderness. Two years ago, I chose to withdraw, to let them be.
But now he acted as if he still deeply loved me? Even if Beverly had passed away from cancer, his attitude shouldn’t be this way.
“Excuse me, Marcus is my legitimate fiancé,” I said. “Our wedding is on the 18th of this month–ten days from now.”
My words were like thunder in Dominic’s ears. His eyes instantly reddened. He couldn’t accept it, couldn’t accept his beloved marrying another man!
But I had lost interest in engaging with him. I didn’t want an irrelevant person to ruin my welcome party. I gestured for everyone to move to another location.
As we passed Dominic, he instinctively reached out and grabbed my sleeve.
But I had no feelings left for him; I ruthlessly pulled away, taking Marcus’s hand and leaving. Dominic remained standing where he was, watching us go.
In the car, Marcus immediately released me, moving away and letting out a cold snort. I laughed; he was clearly jealous.
This was the first time I’d experienced a man being jealous for me. When I was with Dominic, his attitude was always indifferent.
I tried to make him jealous to get his attention. I deliberately colluded with other guys, going to work and eating with them, even posting on social media. I waited for Dominic to ask what was going on.
A week passed, but he didn’t ask anything. I finally asked him if he wasn’t bothered seeing me with other guys.
I’d never forget his answer: he simply glanced at me and said, “I don’t care.” Those three words were deeply etched into my
heart.
Now, just the appearance of my ex–boyfriend caused Marcus
