He thought Jane, having been by his side for twenty years, wouldn’t give up easily. He’d been waiting for her return, wanting to pour out his heart. He believed they could reconcile.
Finally, after two years, fate gave him a chance. But he saw the young man beside Jane. He could tell that their closeness was

He overheard the young man call Jane gently. Two years ago, Jane went to her professor’s lab; this young man was probably her
junior. Dominic felt a little relieved.
He followed us into the restaurant.
As Marcus and I opened the private room door, there was a loud “bang“. Confetti rained down on us. Alexa rushed forward,
playfully grabbing my hand.
“Not a single message in two years! If I hadn’t known you were in the lab, I would have filed a missing person report!”
The room erupted in laughter and teasing.
“Yeah, you disappeared after saying you were canceling the wedding. If it weren’t for Alexa, we wouldn’t even know! That’s not
cool.”
“Exactly! You didn’t tell us anything, and you’re late for your own welcome party! You’re going to be punished!”
“That’s right, we’re drinking until we drop!”
Marcus hadn’t met my childhood friends before; he was nervous, worried they wouldn’t like him. Sensing his anxiety, I squeezed
his hand. Our eyes met, and he visibly relaxed.
Seeing my friends‘ genuine joy at my return moved me. But first, I needed to introduce Marcus.
I cleared my throat, raised our joined hands, and announced, “By the way, I’d like to introduce my junior colleague, Marcus.”
I paused, then continued, “He’s also my fiancé.”
After my relationship with Dominic, I thought I’d struggle to start a new relationship. I even considered dedicating myself to research. But over the past two years, Marcus had captured my heart.
Marcus and Dominic were completely different. If Dominic was an unyielding stone, Marcus was a warm ray of sunshine. With Marcus, I truly understood what it meant to be loved and what true love felt like. A year into our relationship, on our anniversary, he proposed, and we agreed to marry after the experiment ended.
The room erupted in cheers.
“Oh, you sneaky thing! You were secretly dating while doing research!”
“Fiancé?! When’s the wedding? I want to be a bridesmaid!”
“Me too!”
The joyous atmosphere eased Marcus’s tension. I smiled, about to announce the wedding date, when a trembling voice came from

“He’s your fiancé. What about
