Even after I died, the voice messages he sent me were filled with one demand–never step foot in the Jones family home again.
But now that I was gone, what was he trying to prove? Why was he pretending to be the heartbroken lover?
The assistant, caught off guard by Allen’s reaction, struggled to find his voice again.
“Mr. Jones, I’m at the operating room next to Miss Darby’s,” he said, slower this time. “Madam’s body is still here. I’ve asked the
hospital staff to handle it, but… there are wounds on her body. I’m not sure what happened.”
A pause hung heavy between them before he continued, his tone turning hesitant.
“Mr. Jones, as an outsider, I probably shouldn’t say this. But… why didn’t you believe her? Her medical records are real. I had
known Madam for a long time, and I’d never seen her lie.
“Her health had been deteriorating. She just didn’t want to worry you. Every time she needed medicine, she asked me to pick it up for her. If it hadn’t become unbearable, she wouldn’t have snuck to the hospital for an examination.”

Five years of hidden marriage. I knew he didn’t want the world to know I existed. So, I stayed home, keeping myself invisible.
The only times I ventured out were to find him the perfect anniversary gift.
This year, I had already chosen it. But I would never get the chance to give it to him.
The assistant’s words hung in the air, each one striking Allen with weight he couldn’t ignore. His lips moved soundlessly. His eyes reddened as the veins on the back of his hands bulged.
“When did she start feeling unwell?” he asked, voice thin and strained. “Why didn’t I know? When did she come for the examination? So that pregnancy report… and the cancer diagnosis… they were real?”
It was hard to tell if he was asking the assistant or trying to convince himself.
The call ended.
Allen grabbed his coat and headed for the door.
Behind him, Sadie let out a low cry, clutching her chest as she collapsed onto the bed.
“Allen, it hurts,” she gasped. “Is something wrong with Mia? I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have come back to disrupt your life.”
Before, Allen would have dropped everything to comfort her.
But now, as he faced the woman he had known for years, a flicker of impatience crossed his face for the first time.
“Yes,” he said. “Something happened to Mia. She’s in the hospital. I have to go.”
He turned to leave, but Sadie grabbed his arm.
“Allen, is she still angry with me?” Her voice was soft and fragile. “I know I shouldn’t have come back, but I don’t have anyone
else here. You’re the only person I know. She never liked me. I could see it on your wedding day. It’s all my fault…”
Her tears fell, one after another, as if on cue.
“There’s something I never told you,” she added. “That day, at your wedding… I didn’t leave on my own. It was Mia. She sent her
bodyguards to drag me out.”
I hovered in the corner, burning with rage.
