cab, he desperately tried to recall the events.
He remembered being followed, then dragged into an alley, a knife pressed against his side. He’d surrendered his money, but the
attacker stabbed him anyway.
He thought he was dying, but then a shadowy figure tackled the attacker. He managed to call the police before collapsing. He woke up to Beverly, naturally assuming she’d saved him.
But Alexa said it was Jane. Jane had also been stabbed and was unconscious for three days. She’d woken up after Dominic was
discharged and chose not to claim any credit.
Dominic’s anxiety grew. He couldn’t imagine what he’d done to Jane, his actual savior. At the hospital, Beverly was surprised to
see him.
“Dominic, aren’t you supposed to be at Jane’s wedding?” she asked. She noticed his injured hand and exclaimed, “What happened to your hand? I’ll call a doctor.”
“No,” Dominic interrupted calmly. “Beverly, were you really my savior?” He intensely scrutinized her, searching for any sign of
deception.
Beverly, clearly caught off guard, showed a flicker of panic before regaining her composure. “Of course, you woke up to me. Don’t
you remember?”
She insisted, but Dominic noticed her initial hesitation. His heart sank. Beverly wasn’t his savior.
