A bitter smile appeared on his lips as he begged, “I really do understand what I did wrong. Can we go back to how things were? I
really will be good to you this time!
“I’ve already looked into everything. Wendy was the one who orchestrated it all. She’s always been envious of how great your life was from the start, so she deliberately approached me. She’s so promiscuous, yet she pretends to be all pure and innocent in front of me. I was tricked by her!”
I stared at his gaunt face and recalled all the pain he had caused me both in my previous life and this current one.
In my previous life, to exact revenge on Wendy’s behalf, he stood to the side and watched me bleed to death during a difficult
childbirth.
In this life, he caused me to lose my child and the use of my right hand, and even shattered the pendant that held the last connection I had to my child–all to save Wendy.
I didn’t think I’d be able to forgive him even after many lifetimes.
When Steven saw that my expression didn’t change in the slightest, he shakily grabbed something from his pocket, clutched it very carefully in his hand, then presented it to me.
“Honey, look. This is our baby’s ashes. I did my best to pick them up, and I even got the pendant fixed. Can you forgive me?”
I reached for the pendant and stared at it, feeling stunned.
He assumed I was wavering and exclaimed hopefully, “Honey, we can go back to how things were, right? Let’s start over, for the
sake of the
child…”
