“She’s at fault, but so are you. You trusted her and your mother blindly; you chose to believe their nonsense instead of me.
Everything everyone else says makes sense to you, but I’m wrong no matter what I do. You’ve never trusted me.
“I bet you don’t know this, but I had a high fever on the day Valerie lied to you about her stomach hurting. I almost died from that fever, but you couldn’t care less. You had Valerie in your arms–there was no space for me there.”
I wiped my tears and looked at Chuck as he sobbed. Suddenly, I felt like there was no point in talking about all of this anymore. I said, “Let’s get the divorce over and done with. I’ll wait for you tomorrow morning.”
I took my phone from him and turned to leave. He cried out my name from behind, but I only walked faster.
I’d been in such a hurry to find a place to stay upon returning from Westmont that I hadn’t paid attention to the location. Now that I’d gotten everything off my chest, I realized my new place was close to the hospital where Chuck worked.
Jordan was worried that I’d yet to get everything I needed for the new place since I’d moved in in a hurry, so he asked me out for dinner.
I gave the place a quick tidy–up before leaving to meet Jordan. Unfortunately, I ran into Chuck on my way out of the

neighborhood. He was heading to the hospital for a night shift. Meanwhile, Jordan waved at me.

The three of us stood there. Chuck was the first to break the silence. “Who is he? Have you already found someone new? We’re not
divorced yet, Stephanie.”
I looked past him and fixed my gaze on Jordan. “Give me a second, okay? I need to deal with this.”
He gave me an “okay” sign. I turned to Chuck and said, “We’re just friends. Besides, it’s not like you can stop me from being with someone else.”
His expression darkened. He looked like he was going to fly into a rage at any second.
