He only returned after seeing Valerie off. When he saw me still standing there, he said coldly, “I already told you that I don’t have
time now. Does your nonsense mean more than a patient’s life?”
After that, he turned and headed straight to the operating theater.
I knew Chuck had spent the whole night with Valerie. He could forgo his rest to be with her only because she was on her period,
yet he wasn’t willing to give me a few minutes.
When I returned home, I saw that Valerie had somehow gotten the keys and entered. She sat on the couch in my lace pajamas and
had a glass of iced coffee before her.
“Did you forget what Chuck told you? You shouldn’t be drinking anything cold when you’re on your period.”
She looked at me with a sneer and raised an eyebrow. “Chucky is the only one who believes my nonsense. Don’t tell me you fell for
it, too.”
I sighed to myself. When I headed to the bedroom, I saw that my clothes were strewn across the floor. I hurried to the door and asked Valerie, “Don’t you have any manners? How could you enter someone else’s house at will and go through their clothes?
Could you be any more shameless?”
She picked up her coffee and took a sip. “Shame? I don’t need that. Chucky loves how shameless I am, yet here you are, asking me
to have some shame.”
I lost the patience to talk to someone like her. I packed a few things and grabbed my bag before leaving. Valerie had snatched my
husband and home–what else did I have to live for?

Chapter 5

I booked a flight to Westmont. Night had already fallen when I arrived at Westmont Airport. I turned on my phone to see several
missed calls from Chuck.
It looked like he’d finally remembered me. I only returned his call after checking in to the hotel I’d reserved.
When the call connected, he started berating me. “What the hell are you playing at, Stephanie? You knew Val was on her period,
yet you forced her to drink iced coffee. What were you trying to do? Also, why did you leave without a word? You left all those clothes on the floor, didn’t you?”
“Are you done? It’s my turn to talk if you are,” I said icily.
Chuck wanted to say something else but stopped when he heard my frosty tone. In his mind, I always had to act humbly and be inferior to him. It seemed he wouldn’t be happy any other way.
