She turned to leave.
But he wouldn’t let her go so easily.
In a moment of desperation, he grabbed her wrist.
“Violet.” His voice broke. “I swear, I’ve only ever loved you. You’re the only one in my heart.”
She pulled her hand free.
For a moment, she looked at him. The urgency on his face, the raw emotion in his eyes–it didn’t seem fake.
And yet, she only smiled. A quiet, bitter smile.

“Love me? Was it love when you talked about Ruby in front of me with your friends? Was it love when you asked my wedding dress designer to make a gown for her? Was it love when you waited for me to fall asleep before sneaking downstairs to meet her? If this is your idea of love, then it’s too cheap. I don’t want it.”
With each word, Grayson’s face turned a shade paler, until he looked as if he might collapse.
Her words cut through him like a blade, slicing straight to the bone.
For the first time in his life, he truly hated himself.
If only he had never touched Ruby, none of this would have happened.
